Distinctive Facilities

Courtrooms, correctional centers, performing arts centers, airports and open plan office spaces are very different facilities, each with its own distinctive requirements for communication, presentation and life safety systems. Throughout our history, CSI has had the privilege of designing and installing a vast range of systems for highly specialized facilities.

Detention Facilities
If you have looked through some of our web site, you may have noticed that one of our specialties is integrating separate technologies into a unified system. This is more predominant in detention facilities. Incorporating cell door control, intercom, audio monitoring, interlock control, video monitoring, duress alarm, and lockdown control, detention electronic systems can get quite sophisticated.
CSI understands this unique environment. We understand the requirements for security, the “tamper-proof” hardware and, most important, the need to make the whole package simple and reliable to operate. In partnership with SecurePlex Systems (a division of Rauland-Borg), CSI has provided detention electronic systems for juvenile detention facilities, regional jails and courthouses. Programmable system configurations, in conjunction with touch screen console operation, allow us to provide flexible solutions for almost any high-security environment.
- Integrated PLC applications

Open Plan Offices

The employee in the cubicle next to you is talking on the phone about the new car he wants to buy; the copy machine is cranking out and stapling 60 copies of the boss’s new presentation; the doctor in the examining room next to yours is discussing areas of health you wish you’d never heard of; you can’t help but overhear a privileged conversation between the defense attorney and his client. Is it any wonder that you can’t focus on your own situation?
Privacy issues and productivity losses due to distractions are very common issues today. From health care facilities to corporate offices, employers and employees struggle to maintain privacy and keep focused on their tasks. Luckily, there is a solution: Speech Privacy (A.K.A. Sound Masking) systems are designed to reduce the ability of an individual to hear and understand surrounding conversations. Using low-level, non-distracting sound, these systems can dramatically improve productivity, and increase privacy.
While large “open plan” offices have made use of this technology for many years, smaller professional offices and medical facilities are now adapting the technology due to the tremendous desire to increase privacy. Systems are now available to handle facilities ranging from dozens of square feet up to many thousands of square feet. And new technologies enable these speech privacy systems to serve double-duty, incorporating public address and background/foreground music.
For more information, give us a call (804) 559-4274. We will be happy to send you information on Speech Privacy. We’ll even come to your facility for a no-obligation site survey.
Performing Arts Centers

Just when you thought you figured out the way to solve the audio needs of a multi-purpose Performing Arts Facility, the needs changed. You knew how to make the sound system work for a children’s music concert, a forum with a world-renowned lecturer, a major school board meeting and a fund raising event...all in the same week. But now you need video!
It’s not unusual for facilities of this type to host an art movie (requiring a 5.1 surround sound system) and a distance-learning event (with satellite capability), as well as a variety of other events. No company is better equipped to design and install integrated system solutions for multi-purpose facilities than we are at CSI. Speak with our sales team and creative designers to see how we can make it all happen for you.
Transportation
“This is the final boarding call for X Airlines, Flight 1653—now boarding at Gate 16.”
If you missed that announcement, you may have just missed your flight. Thousands of people move through airports, public transportation terminals and train stations every day. CSI understands the importance of highly intelligible public address systems for transportation facilities.
CSI provides systems that can automatically play prerecorded announcements, warnings and messages. To meet ADA requirements (the Americans with Disabilities Act), we provide systems that visually display the audible announcements so those with hearing impairments do not miss the announcements. From automated flight announcement systems to terminal courtesy announcements, we make sure that passengers get the message.
Our intelligent systems know when the traffic in the terminal picks up. The systems automatically recognize when the ambient noise level in a building increases and adjust the output volume of the announcements automatically. When the rush hour is over, and the noise level decreases, the volume returns to normal—automatically.
CSI is pleased to have been involved with such unique projects as the Richmond International Airport expansion and the Norfolk International Airport renovation. If you need high quality announcement systems for transportation facilities or other public spaces, give us a call at (804) 559-4274. We can help.
Boardrooms
The days when the executive boardroom was a place of solace for private meetings between key upper management staffers are long gone. Today, boardrooms and conference rooms must serve as sites for information exchange, places where ideas are shared. And if you’re still using the green-lined ledger sheets and flip charts, you’re a bit behind the times. Worldwide high-speed data networks and videoconferencing systems allow real-time collaboration on information, imagery, documents and data.
So, how does a business take advantage of this modern marvel of technology? CSI can help. If you have the ideas, we can put together the tools that allow you to share those ideas, whether it be across the conference table or across the country.
Courtrooms

Increasing activity within the legal system has rapidly advanced the technology requirements of contemporary courtrooms. From high-quality sound systems that allow everyone to hear every word to video systems for remote arraignment and evidence presentation, the use of technology in courtrooms is growing—fast. Videotape, computer files and documents all require a means of being shown to the Judge and then to the rest of the court. Document cameras connected to video projectors are now commonplace. And, as all this “stuff” starts to appear in the courtroom, the method of controlling everything is becoming more and more important.
CSI is uniquely qualified to provide technical assistance for court facilities struggling to enter this new age of technology. We have the audio, video and control system experience to solve the problems within the courtroom. Furthermore, our expertise with detention communication and control systems allows us to improve the security of the facility outside the courtroom. Projects such as the U.S. District Court in Richmond have provided us with real-world experience. Call us at (804) 559-4274. We can put our experience to work for you.
Industrial
Communications and information distribution for industrial facilities has its own unique set of challenges. Conventional public address systems do not work well in plants with high noise levels. Getting a message to Joe in a 200,000 square foot warehouse can be a problem—if you can even find Joe amidst all the stacks of material. How do you get warning messages to the employees of a campus-style plant in the event of a hazardous material spill?
Over the years CSI has had the privilege of working with organizations including Phillip Morris, Ethyl, and Whitehall Robins. We’ve provided a wide range of systems and services including data networks and fire alarm systems. We would love to put our expertise to work for you. And if you have a challenging environment, we’re up to it! Contact us today to begin your communications improvements.
Sports Facilities

From the local high school football field to the large national sports stadiums, spectators want to know what’s going on. “What’s the score?” “Who scored that last point?”
Recognizing the inferior quality of the sound systems at some local venues many years ago, CSI began designing and installing high-quality systems, which use the latest loudspeaker technology and advanced signal processing systems. They allow spectators to know what the score is and who made the last touchdown.
Working with local area schools and athletic booster organizations, CSI has installed dozens of sound systems that provide highly intelligible speech and music reinforcement. For the Virginia Motor Speedway in Saluda, CSI designed a high-level system that lets visitors hear the announcer over the roar of the cars going around the track. Another system provides announcements to the drivers in the infield and staging areas.
Athletic clubs have made use of our services to design and install high-impact system for aerobics facilities and work-out rooms. We’ve even put video projectors into gymnasiums, using special “basketball-proof” protective housings!
We love the challenges of sporting facilities. Give us a call at (804) 559-4274 and let us design a system for your stadium...or gym...or arena...or tennis court...or riding club...or whatever!
